Let’s take a pause from discussing investments to consider the significance of the founding of this, the country that we love. What follows comes from Richard, a great friend of long standing:
“This weekend we celebrate not only one of the greatest and most important days in the history of the USA, but also one of the BEST days in the history of humanity. On that weekend, uniquely talented and influential men set down the reasons for beginning a new nation based on the most powerful IDEA in human history – FREEDOM.”
Fortunately, those great men left many letters and documents outlining their ideas, which continue to guide our nation even today.
Among those letters, I believe this portion of John Adams’ letter to his wife remains one of the most powerful and inspiring. Here is a part:
‘But the Day is past. The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epoch in the History of America—I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more. You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not—I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States—Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not.’
Let us consider who we are as a nation and who we want to be as we offer our prayers of Thanks and Hope.
