And now we approach the mid-point of the year, the month that for many of us begins the vacation season. The beach or mountains or lakes, even perhaps a trip outside the country.
From Rogers’ and Hammerstein’s Carousel comes the song for the month, “June is busting out all over.” But this year June isn’t likely to bust out too far: if it does it must be wearing a mask.Does it seem as though we have had enough challenges in five months to equal or exceed a year’s worth—or more?
Through all this the markets have bounced around like a blind man on a pogo stick that’s being ridden on a rollercoaster. Up one day, then down sharply for multiple days, then reversing several times within a day, then back up, then…. you know the weird un-routine.
To borrow again from Rogers and Hammerstein, this time Yul Brenner in The King and I, exclaiming, “Is a puzzlement!” (Damn, I’m starting to sound like a theater reporter.)
A couple of personal notes.
Hard to believe that the musical Carousel was first performed 64 years ago—wow! And The King And I in 1951—double wow!
Let’s use Rogers and Hammerstein one more time, this time applied to the national problem of racial perspectives: from South Pacific, Lieutenant Joe Cable sang, “You’ve got to be taught to be afraid of someone whose eyes are oddly made, and someone whose skin is a different shade, you’ve got to be carefully taught.” Values are learned at home.
